Overview

Hidden away at Lot pt 844 & PT 845 on Gurney Drive, KIN COFFEE offers a uniquely tucked-away café experience in George Town, Penang. This small but charming spot invites coffee lovers to step off the usual path and discover a space that feels simultaneously timeless and intimate. The location itself is a subtle challenge — GPS may not guide you precisely, encouraging a bit of old-school exploration that aligns beautifully with the café’s vintage mid-century vibe.

KIN COFFEE's atmosphere is a blend of nostalgia and artistry. Inside, patrons are greeted by vintage wood furniture, green leather sofas, and carefully curated decorations such as a weathered typewriter and floral accents that evoke a quiet 60s or 70s sunroom. The interplay of lighting and decor creates a serene setting, perfect for those who seek a moment of calm away from the city’s bustle. It’s an inviting retreat that works well for solo patrons absorbed in their thoughts or laptops, couples on casual dates, or anyone who appreciates a slow, mindful coffee break.

Central to KIN COFFEE’s appeal is its coffee selection, notably the Flat White and Filter Coffee — both crafted with care and a dedication to quality beans that release rich, layered aromas. These choices cater to purists who savor the nuance of expertly roasted coffee, inviting customers to sit back and truly savor the moment. Complementing the drinks is the bakery highlight: the Flourless Chocolate Cake. This dessert is a decadent, dense bite that pairs wonderfully with the café’s robust brews, offering a balance between bitter and sweet with every forkful.

The menu’s simplicity—coffee and a handful of cakes—underscores an intentional focus on quality over quantity. Such a curated selection aligns well with the café’s ambiance, inviting patrons to slow down rather than rush through a meal. While seating is limited and can be tight during peak hours, it enhances the cozy and exclusive vibe, making each visit feel like a quiet discovery rather than a loud gathering.

KIN COFFEE appeals most to those who appreciate craft coffee within a thoughtfully designed space that mixes subtle retro charm with contemporary calm. Whether you’re a dedicated coffee connoisseur or a casual visitor looking for a unique spot near the bustling Gurney Drive, this café promises an experience that goes beyond the average cup. It’s less about convenience and more about connection—to the craft, the atmosphere, and the feeling of retreating from the present.

Drove by twice navigated by GPS or maybe 北斗,even that couldn’t pin down the exact spot until I decided to do it the old fashion way, park my car and hunt it down with determination, two legs and my nose. 209 was no where on sight but I narrow it down by elementary counting and brave my way through a sort of wall material shopfront and finally was let in by a lady, “follow the fragrance of the roasted bean”. Wonder why it was called Kin Coffee? The two operations, back and front, consanguine? Next of kin? Connected? I wasn’t here to solve the mystery but for the coffee. It was magical as I walked passed a set of green leather mid century wood sofa, a vintage typewriter displayed on the side as if it was last used yesterday, then a floral country village sunroom oddly appeared in the middle of the premise beside a green staircase screaming silently out loud “why not”? I was tumbling to the 60’s or maybe 70’s in an invisible bubble, time seems to standstill and I felt, for an instant, the people, sipping coffee, tip tapping on their laptop, selfie’ing, or merely gazing in vacuum, not truly existed. But the coffee is real and it tastes good, best to have it with one of their three choices of cakes. Look around, feel the air, still almost surreal, nostalgic with a hint of melancholy, but the coffee is good, and the world is beautiful indeed.

Had a great brunch at the café next to Pickle by the Sea. The food is simple but surprisingly delicious. The toast was perfectly crispy and the scrambled eggs were incredibly soft and creamy. The drinks were great too! It has a nice atmosphere and was a great spot for brunch or coffee

an interesting place. the entrance is at the back of the building. so, dont follow the GPS. GPS will bring you to the front and say you have arrived. but, it is actually at the backlane. :) this cafe only serves coffee and cakes (limited choices). there is a florist within. the cafe setup is quite interesting. there are beautiful paintings on wall. a good photo ops place and quiet cafe.

Came by to do some work and order coffee. It was a great experience overall. Cafe ambience is great, staff service is amazing, after I finished my cappuccino, one of the staff brought over some water without me asking so that’s a plus point for me! The cappuccino I ordered was good, as expected. 10/10 would return to this cafe.
